Every student (and staff member) at Winterbourne International Academy is part of one of Five Guilds:
Students in years 7 – 9 are expected to wear an Academy tie with strips of their Guild’s colour (i.e. green for Aquila, red for Griffin, blue for Lion, silver for Pegasus and gold for Phoenix).
Whilst each Guild has its own personal identity, they all endorse a set of core values that affect student aspiration: a sense of belonging; a sense of accomplishment; opportunities for fun and excitement; a spirit of adventure; curiosity and creativity; confidence to take action and opportunities for leadership and responsibility.
Introduction from the Heads of Guild
Miss M Greaves, Head of Aquila Guild
You might know that Aquila is also a Latin name for the majestic eagle. Just like the eagle, I am looking forward to watching you soar to achieve academic and personal success. As the “King of Birds”, eagles are revered for their power, strength and intelligence: qualities I know you will demonstrate with pride.
I am looking forward to getting to know you in all the exciting Guild events coming up this term.
Welcome to the Griffins! The Griffin is a mythological beast with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion is traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin is an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins have the strength and courage of lions and the agility and speed of eagles meaning they are a true force to be reckoned with!
I am looking forward to seeing what talents you can bring to Griffin Guild. Our Guild motto: ‘Loyalty and Strength, Fairness and Determination’ encapsulates everything I expect from the ‘Griffins’. I cannot wait to work with you, bringing together all of your skills to make Griffin the best Guild – just as you would expect from the ‘king of all creatures’! Go Griffins!
Hello Lions! I am incredibly excited about having the opportunity to welcome you to Lion Guild at WIA where the motto is Truth, Strength and Pride. For me this means being true to your goals and aspirations, being strong in the belief you can succeed and having pride for yourself and the school. I want every member of Lion Guild to take this motto on board and grasp every opportunity that is given to them in and outside of the academy.
As a person I am immensely competitive and as a result I will want to be nothing short of the best Guild in the academy. I am sure you, as a cohort, will strive for this to happen and we in the Federation will provide you with the support you will need to be the best that you can be. I look forward to meeting you all.
Mrs L Moncur, Interim Head of Pegasus Guild (cover until Feb 2018)
Mrs S Watkins, Head of Pegasus Guild (matenity)
A warm welcome to those joining Pegasus Guild. It is with great delight that I have been given the opportunity to become Head of Pegasus Guild at WIA. Our Guild motto is ‘on wings with courage’. In Greek Mythology, Pegasus was a noble winged horse who always thought about others and took his place amongst the stars. Within Pegasus Guild students will have a sense of belonging. We will help you to develop your leadership skills by getting involved in the many opportunities and responsibilities that will be available. To create a Guild spirit, students in Pegasus Guild will be encouraged to take part in a number of fun activities and competitions. I also hope that students will be strongly involved in supporting our chosen Guild charity, one of the first decisions the Guild will have to make. Like Pegasus, I hope you will fly high and ‘reach for the stars’ and I look forward to being with you on your journey.
Mr P Milton, Head of Phoenix Guild
I am very pleased to welcome you to the Phoenix Guild. Here in Phoenix we have the motto ‘To a Valiant Heart All Things are Possible’. We strive for courage, both inside and outside of the classroom, and for excellence in order to reach our full potential, rising up when we face adversity. Phoenix Guild students will embody the Federation ethos of ‘Empowering all to excel’.
We will be building a Guild Spirit based on a sense of community, collaboration and competitiveness. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and watching you develop over the forthcoming year.
