English

English includes: Language, Literature, Library Skills

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3, students’ progress and attainment are assessed using the Assessing Pupils’ Progress (APP) framework. Students produce a selection of assessed portfolio pieces every term for each of the three key strands: Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. The programme of study for English comprises a wide and varied range of literature from various genres and historical eras, in addition to units focused on functional skills such as Reading for Meaning. Students are taught in mixed ability classes throughout Years 7, 8 and 9.

Key Stage 4

Students study for GCSEs in English Language and English Literature, following the WJEC syllabus. Students are taught in mixed ability classes, with the exception of two Higher Achiever classes in both Years 10 and 11.

For GCSE English Language, students are assessed using a combination of examinations, written controlled assessments and Speaking and Listening assessments. The marks are allocated as follows:

  • Two Examinations (40%) - Studying Written Language and Using Written Language.
  • Three written controlled assessments (40%) – Studying Written Language (analysis task based on a novel), Studying Spoken Language (analysis of a transcript) and Using Written Language (narrative and descriptive writing tasks).
  • Three Speaking and Listening assessments (20%)

In GCSE English Literature, students are assessed via a combination of two written examinations (together worth 75% of the English Literature mark) plus one controlled assessment comparing a Shakespeare play to a selection of linked poetry (25% of the mark). Examination texts studied include Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Blood Brothers, Lord of the Flies and An Inspector Calls.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, students can opt to study A-level English Language (AQA Specification B) or A-level English Literature (currently AQA Specification B; from September 2012, we will follow the WJEC syllabus). A combined A-level English Language and Literature course is offered by our colleagues at Yate International Academy as part of the Federation Sixth Form arrangement.

For students studying the International Baccalaureate, English is the Group 1 subject. The IB English course is literature-based, and students can opt to study it at either Higher or Standard Levels. From September 2012, we will also be offering Film as an option for Group 6 (The Arts).
